The last shot of rain was Sunday and theres been some cooler weather for the beginning part of this week. Since its still busy with plenty of Kings around, anglers need to carefully spot the places where the browns are shadowing the Kings. Likely there are some steelhead in the Oak now and the drift conditions remain challenging to get on them. Any future rise in flows should perk up the action for fresh fish so well hope the upcoming forecast brings that on either with rain or snow and then melt off. The only sure way to know is to get out there and make a few drifts! Look for improving action thru the month with cooling weather or cooperating wind and waves and water color. Keep informed about 2021 canal hours. Forecast thru this week remaining after today is for warm temps in the 40sF. Cover lots of water and get the drift down and slow and you could find a chromer! Keep informed from the NYS Canal web for changes and restrictions with canal waters. There was another couple inches of wet snow and something like a 0.25 inch of rain thru last night. Flows will likely just open up minus any blow out, as long as there is no significant precipitation. Any emergency Canal drainage flows are now tempered and so that leaves tribs like the Oak and Sandy mostly to regular run of the river flows. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. At the Waterport Dam, its reported there are just a few fish and likely none holding in downstream fast water runs or holes. Sandy Creek is probably remaining stubbornly stained from that Canal drainage but definitely dropping back some. Remember as these kings start to stage that their preferred water temps are also changing. Even though I wouldnt look for turbine flows to change much in the near term, once the water temps begin to rise even a little the drift chances should improve and more fresh fish will hopefully be evidenced all around. A few good browns reported to be hooked up yesterday on the Oak. Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. I have stayed busy trolling 60-105 ft near bottom with cut bait fly rigs especially on magnum wire divers. Those fish should be somewhere in the system and may be spread out now farther upstream. Not hearing of much lower river and rivermouth action as probably the bulk of Kings are more upstream now. Seems like the Kings just arent concentrated in any particular fast water spot in any trib and thats the tougher reports I hear from guys. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Check the Canal schedule for duration. Trout and salmon rely on alewife in particular in the open Lake waters of Lake Ontario. So conditions real nice, especially considering how dry summer was and how some of this fall has been so far. Since we are not getting cold temps and/or snow, hopefully we can get rain along with the warm temps to help maintain flows. A good day might be a couple of hookups with a steelhead thrown in. All the trib flows look on the retreat from previous snowmelt and precipitation. Guys in the Oak early today still fishing whats been the medium ish flows and slightly stained, but flows likely headed toward high and stained if not later today then by tomorrow. Without access back to Lake Ontario, those overflow fish are likely goners unless theres a perfectly timed spate of water later this spring. If you catch one, please release it immediately and not harm it. Downstream spots on the Oak for the past weekend may have been tougher on what was dropping and clearing flows, altho we did not hear from many guys. Geezer and Frost Bite were the best spoons. Classic scenario in the Oak where dirty water color lags behind the highest flows. Cool nights and cooperative winds should make for better battles with more staging Kings and trout chances as well. It remains to be seen if theres any prolonged cold yet ahead of us. With all the high water weve had previously, you might not have predicted any low flows this spring. Fished pretty much 100- 250 feet of water. When flows are reduced, guys are seeing a handful of browns and a few more steelhead nearer the dam. Fishable flows we have now in Johnson, Oak and Sandy largely a result of bolstered Erie Canal flows. When high flows drop and/or cold flows warm and/or dirty water clears then anglers who can make good drifts or swings get in on the action. Starting Tuesday, September 7th, the Orleans County Boat Launch on Ontario Street (east side of the Oak Orchard River) will be closed for reconstruction until the Spring of 2022. Certain days youll notice that salmon movement by seeing them crashing around, but as often as not that movement seems to go on quietly. Boaters are asked to use the Oak Orchard State Marine Park on the WEST side of the River on Archbald Rd. The state is funding the effort as part of the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. For now that is, until any more bigger rains or snows may come. Inside water has been sporadic. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. The NYSDEC Region 8 office in Avon, NY would in-fact love to hear from more anglers showing concern for trib issues. The fish are placed in downstream pens at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina and will be fed and cared for before release in about 3 4 weeks. With any luck well get some measurable liquid precip to help flows out. Downstream slow water areas will be freezing and closing in while upstream areas should stay open except for some bank ice. Look for flows to stay similar since the Canal feed is scheduled to continue thru the first part of Dec.Any significant precipitation could cause flows to go higher. More upcoming windy systems produce stirred inshore water which releases river scent so expect more incoming big fish! New York State is open for fishing and DEC encourages anglers to recreate locally at a nearby waterbody. After a few hours the bite slowed so we decided to go to Laker land. A little more precipitation from the end of the past weekend and beginning part of this week has bumped up the trib flows slightly. Johnson Creek had a nice bump in flows and got stained and guys reported some salmon on the move there. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. Typical more summer- like weather is setting in, including steady southwest to west breezes perfect for attracting even more fish to Orleans County/Lake Ontario waters off the Oak! Warm weather forecasted to prevail all week and warmer yet for the upcoming weekend around 70F. We are generally most confident in our Oak interpretations, less so in the other area smaller tribs. The other area smaller tribs have med or slightly high and stained flows. Wash hands often or use a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available. The action at the Oak rivermouth is something like a few fish each prime period like dawn or dusk. There was a little bit of snow showers too that is melting off today. The fishing this last week has been better than the previous couple weeks. In the spring while waiting for perfect conditions sometimes things only get worse, so if theres a reasonable fishing window consider hitting it sooner then later. The bend in the rod didnt feel like an average steelhead and we were thinking a decent king salmon was on the line. Concentrate on the faster shires and ruffles as they are more oxygenated.
